Going Public
"The event invoked in me a large feeling of hope and
pride that it still exists. Despite all of these years of becoming corporate
slaves and demons to the mighty pound/dollar we have come through and are now
able to come up with something that inspires and sparks emotion in others."
Deb Williams
On the 7th March 2003 The Red Room invited interested and curious parties to
Go Public and engage in a day of provocative performed debate exploring new
theatre writing as a public form.
Over 30 companies, practitioners and theatre writers contributed to a dynamic
collage, with time for spontaneous participation and discussion. This unique
event included live debate in the auditorium, videos of public theatre experiments
in the cinema, workshops for writers in the creative space and surprises in
the spaces in between.
Going Public; a day for artists, audiences and policy makers across different
communities of new theatre writing to share ideas and break down walls. Curated
by Lisa Goldman, artistic director of The Red Room and MC’ed by Lemn Sissay.
“In facing up to the problems of our time we are also attempting
to solve our own theatrical problems both technological and ideological.
By doing this we are ensuring the future of the theatre, a future which will
not be born in the genteel atmosphere of retirement and seclusion but rather
in the clash and turmoil of the battles between the oppressors and the oppressed” -
Joan Littlewood 1936
