The Red Room is a not for profit organisation, registered as a Company limited
by guarantee. We work with artists and communities from the widest variety of
social and cultural backgrounds. We also involve ourselves in debates and activism
around culture and politics.
2005 will see the Red Room’s tenth birthday. Over the last decade we have
enabled a generation of writers to take the risks they cannot elsewhere. We
read over 200 scripts a year, mostly unsolicited work, and 90% of the writers
we work with come from socially and economically disadvantaged backgrounds.
The Red Room writers’ group provides writers with a supportive environment
in which they can forum groundbreaking ideas and try out new things, providing
valuable creative opportunities for both the company and the writers themselves.
The Red Room believes that theatre should be a genuinely public art form. The
Red Room set up and have taken forward the Artists Against the War network,
which was founded at the outset of the War on Terror. We facilitated and curated
Going Public; a brave and ground-breaking day of performed debate about theatres
role as a public form.
We create work with and for a wide ranging community regardless of age, sex or nationality. We work with disadvantaged and diverse groups within the community enabling a true voice and vision for the future.
